NYFW: Mara Hoffman

I had the pleasure of attending Mara Hoffman’s NYFW show last Saturday (thanks to Kosi giving up her ticket!) it just might be one of the best shows I’ve ever been to! Why? Because Mara in addition to pulling inspiration from Europe’s wild men, she used the iconic Luke Skywalker as her muse for the collection. While Mara Hoffman is known for her bohemian chic style, this line took a trip to Tunisia (where the Tatooine scenes of Star Wars are filmed) to show us just what it means to be a stylish Jedi!  Across a runway backdropped by Tatooine’s binary sunset, the show began with a snippet of (what else?) Episode IV’s “Binary Sunset” composition. The F/W15 collection comes replete with geometric designs, crepe fabrics, chiffon tufting appliqués, Tatooine-reminiscent color-ways and exactly the kind of drape you’d expect of said stylish Jedi. While intricate braids paid homage to Princess Leia, their nail art caught my eye and I can’t wait to do a tutorial on it for Lacquer Saturday! Continue reading

Fashion’s Night…IN!

Being completely honest here…I’ve kind of been dreading Fashion’s Night Out this year. The first few years were amazing, with great sales, free drinks and GPOY’s being out and about. Last year though FNO took a turn for the overly crowded with previews for collections that weren’t even on sale (I think they forgot the point of FNO) Don’t get me wrong I still had a great night, BUT you couldn’t get me back into SoHo on FNO with a forklift!

That being said, I’m happy to hear some of my favorite designers are having online sales in the spirit of FNO, and who doesn’t love a sale!?

RebelChicNYC is giving shoppers 40% off her handmade leather treasures, now through Sept 9th. There will also be daily product updates so be sure to check back for more!

Yumnah Najah will have flash sales, giveaways and exclusive looks at their upcoming collection starting at 6pm tonight! Use code FNO12 for 30% off until 11pm!

Ainsley NY will be offering a chance to win a complimentary gift with any purchase tonight from 6-11pm

So if you’re out of town or just don’t feel like braving the madness, you can still participate and get some goodies. Are there any other online sales you’ll be taking part in?

4 Questions with: Poetik Designs

Harlem Haberdashery’s newest addition, Poetik Design debuted it’s newest collection last night at their exclusive launch party. The uptown boutique is greatly decorated, with photos of Black History legends lining the shop walls. Replete with a limited edition Harlem t-shirt, the new collection pays homage to the designer’s love of music. Nicholas, the design mastermind behind the brand gave me some insight into the line:

FNO Recap!

My Fashion Week experience actually started a day early with a great presentation put on by jewelry genius Samantha House. Replete with her beautiful hand-made pieces, in addition to the (now) standard neverending cupcakes and champagne, she had FREE jewelry for her attendees! Ya’ll know how I feel about free stuff so needless to say I’ve been wearing my new rings everyday since and it goes perfect with my Sephora Nail Bling (clearly I’m addicted to animal prints). And can I just say, those Nail Blings are pretty awesome, granted it took me a few tries to get the hang of it but they’re super cute AND cheaper than the Sally Hansens!! Not to mention I finally got to meet friend in my head/online Channing Hargrove! If you don’t already know her Channing is freelance writer for pretty much every blog I frequent, but check out her personal blog ChanningInTheCity.com 🙂
