NYFW: Mara Hoffman

I had the pleasure of attending Mara Hoffman’s NYFW show last Saturday (thanks to Kosi giving up her ticket!) it just might be one of the best shows I’ve ever been to! Why? Because Mara in addition to pulling inspiration from Europe’s wild men, she used the iconic Luke Skywalker as her muse for the collection. While Mara Hoffman is known for her bohemian chic style, this line took a trip to Tunisia (where the Tatooine scenes of Star Wars are filmed) to show us just what it means to be a stylish Jedi!  Across a runway backdropped by Tatooine’s binary sunset, the show began with a snippet of (what else?) Episode IV’s “Binary Sunset” composition. The F/W15 collection comes replete with geometric designs, crepe fabrics, chiffon tufting appliqués, Tatooine-reminiscent color-ways and exactly the kind of drape you’d expect of said stylish Jedi. While intricate braids paid homage to Princess Leia, their nail art caught my eye and I can’t wait to do a tutorial on it for Lacquer Saturday! Continue reading

Whether it’s your first or 10th year going to NYCC, you learn something new every year about how to ‘survive’ the it (or any con for that matter). So in preparation for this years NYCC, I’ve compiled what I’ve learned over the past few years into this little list:

Forever 21 x Marvel Comics Presents…

Promo-Marvel-comics_image

There isn’t much that makes me happier than when fashion and comics collide (besides maybe when shrimp and tequila collide) so you can imagine my excitement for the introduction of Forever 21’s Marvel Collection! Forever 21 is just about everyone’s go-to shop for fast fashion on the cheap (especially their plus-sized line), so when they team up with my favorite comic book/graphic novel publisher greatness has to ensue. That overall excitement however, was not as long-lived as one would hope. For as cute as some of the pieces are, my favorites of which are below, the biggest size offered is a Large. Cue this face: 2z3w0fs

Maybe they think big girls don’t like comics books? Or just not fashion? I’m also a bit confused as to why Superman, Batman, The Flash and the Transformers are included in this collection as none of them have anything to do with Marvel. In any case here’s a few of my favorites from the collection:

Harry Potter and the 15th Anniversary Revival!

It’s hard to believe it’s been 15 years since we first opened Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, but alas it has. (God I feel old!) So in honor of Harry Potter’s anniversary, author and illustrator Kazu Kibuishi has illustrated new covers for each of the seven best-selling tomes to be released on August 27th. Unfortunately they’ll only be released in paperback version, for now at least, but they will come as a boxed set available here. Kibuishi is also a comic book lover! The Eisner-nominated author created the #1 New York Times bestselling Amulet graphic novel series, as well as Copper, the Flight Anthologies and Daisy Kutter: The Last Train.

Take a look at all 7 of the new covers, in contrast to the originals:

I really like the new illustrations, just looking at these makes me wonder what the back and inside illustrations might look like! But what do you think, do the new illustrations do the saga justice? Will you add the new books to your collection or are you sticking with the old? The boxed set is available via Amazon.com here
