I had the pleasure of attending Mara Hoffman’s NYFW show last Saturday (thanks to Kosi giving up her ticket!) it just might be one of the best shows I’ve ever been to! Why? Because Mara in addition to pulling inspiration from Europe’s wild men, she used the iconic Luke Skywalker as her muse for the collection. While Mara Hoffman is known for her bohemian chic style, this line took a trip to Tunisia (where the Tatooine scenes of Star Wars are filmed) to show us just what it means to be a stylish Jedi! Across a runway backdropped by Tatooine’s binary sunset, the show began with a snippet of (what else?) Episode IV’s “Binary Sunset” composition. The F/W15 collection comes replete with geometric designs, crepe fabrics, chiffon tufting appliqués, Tatooine-reminiscent color-ways and exactly the kind of drape you’d expect of said stylish Jedi. While intricate braids paid homage to Princess Leia, their nail art caught my eye and I can’t wait to do a tutorial on it for Lacquer Saturday! Continue reading
If you’ve been looking for the perfect 4th of July nail art to do for the weekend…join the club! Of course I have a few favorites (found on Pinterest of course), but choosing one is proving a bit difficult. And choosing one that I can feasibly do is even harder! Obviously the Captain America-inspired manis made the top of the list!
Since I can’t decide on a design, I’m leaving it all up to you. Enter below for a chance to win this Julep Summer Goody Box, including their Independence Day-inspired color, America! And since it won’t be the 4th of July forever, there’s a few other goodies to enjoy as well: included in the box is Natasha and Abbie, two vibrant tones that are perfect for summer and a Pomegranate Body Creme! Good luck!!
I’ve been in love with the Suzanne Rae brand since I saw her show this year at New York Fashion Week, so if you haven’t heard of her yet it’s time for you to get acquainted! The women’s ready-to-wear line is both inspired by and made for the empowered and modern woman (which I take to mean New Yorkers!). The Parson’s grad + Brooklynite utilizes experimental draping to create pieces that are feminine yet powerful. She gave me the opportunity to ask her a few questions about her Spring/Summer ’14 line, which of her pieces she’s looking forward to wearing this fall and some of the geekiest things about her!
– How and when did you decide to make the jump from economics to a fashion designer? I actually never went into economics as a career. After studying art history in college I went to work for the Holly Solomon Gallery in New York, I thought I might want to become a gallerist and pursue the art world in that manner. Later, Holly’s passing gave me a different perspective on life, and I thought about becoming a doctor. I wanted to find meaning in what I was doing and perhaps go into some kind of service. While I was studying for the MCAT’s I realized I missed the arts and wanted to create. I found fashion to be an outlet where I could better incorporate my interests of women’s studies, art, and economics and also serve society in a sense. I understood fashion more deeply than medicine, and so therefore could make a better impact on society.
There isn’t much that makes me happier than when fashion and comics collide (besides maybe when shrimp and tequila collide) so you can imagine my excitement for the introduction of Forever 21’s Marvel Collection! Forever 21 is just about everyone’s go-to shop for fast fashion on the cheap (especially their plus-sized line), so when they team up with my favorite comic book/graphic novel publisher greatness has to ensue. That overall excitement however, was not as long-lived as one would hope. For as cute as some of the pieces are, my favorites of which are below, the biggest size offered is a Large. Cue this face:
Maybe they think big girls don’t like comics books? Or just not fashion? I’m also a bit confused as to why Superman, Batman, The Flash and the Transformers are included in this collection as none of them have anything to do with Marvel. In any case here’s a few of my favorites from the collection:
I had the pleasure of meeting the design duo behind the emerging menswear brand Sherman | Preston a few weeks ago and I’ve been in love with the brand ever since! I know I’m not the only woman that’s ever said/heard the words “There’s nothing like a man in a suit”, and thought ‘damn straight!’. Well ladies, these are the suits you want to see that man in! With an eye for dressing the modern man, the metrosexual (do we still call them that?), Sherman Joseph and Preston Williams decided to skip a SS ’13 line to focus on the A/W ’13 collection entitled “Decadence”. I had the chance to speak with them during NYFW for a bit of insight into their brand:
Who is the ShermanPreston man?
– The SHERMAИ | PRESTOИ man is the guy on the cusp of success. He exudes confidence as he juggles his life, ambition and love simultaneously. Though many view him as a renaissance man, he likes to think of himself as a regular guy, with a hint of flare. He is the quintessential modern day man!
